We work together with two hospitals in Quito:
Baca Ortiz
The public children hospital “Baca Ortiz” in Quito is the
first contact point for parents with a sick child, mostly from the poorer
segment of the population. They come from all over the country to Quito. The
hospital provides extremely competent doctors specialized in children’s cancer.
In the case of a cancer diagnosis, a treatment protocol is established but
without further state help, parents are left with a recipe and little hope for
the child because of the lack of financial means to buy the chemotherapy. They
return to their villages with the sick child and therefore forfeit any chance
the child may or may not have had, to survive cancer.
Sometimes parents sell
everything they have, to save their child. In cities, parents look for help
from family, friends and neighbors and often are forced into even more extreme
poverty and debt for many years. Even the most basic remedies, like pain
killers are missing. 90% of the children are between 0 and 10 years old.
